Madama Butterfly is a tragic opera by Giacomo Puccini, about Cio-Cio-San, a young Japanese geisha who marries American naval officer B.F. Pinkerton, believing their marriage is permanent. Pinkerton abandons her shortly after the wedding, only to return years later with a new American wife to claim their son, leading a devastated Butterfly to commit suicide.

I Solisti Veneti, the legendary ensemble based in Venice, performs with conductor Giuliano Carella for the first time at the Festival de La Chaise-Dieu in a programme featuring Italian Baroque music. Boccherini's Stabat Mater in particular, written by the composer when he was at the Spanish court, will be interpreted by soprano Aida Pascu, and is one of the masterpieces of the repertoire; a must for the Festival's first visit to Saint-Just-Saint-Rambert.

La Traviata is a tragic opera by Giuseppe Verdi about Violetta, a Parisian courtesan who sacrifices her chance at true love with Alfredo to uphold his family’s reputation. She leaves her lavish life for the countryside, but is forced to separate from Alfredo by his father, leading to a tragic, illness-stricken death.
